Biography

Bimal K. Bose (Life Fellow, IEEE) received the B.E. degree from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), India, the M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the Ph.D. degree from Calcutta University, India. Currently, he is Emeritus Chair Professor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Formerly, he was an associate professor of electrical engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York (1971-1976) and a research engineer in GE Corporate Research and Development, Schenectady, New York (1976-1987). Since 1987, he had been an Endowed Chair Professor in the University of Tennessee. He specializes in power electronics and motor drives that include AI applications and renewable energy systems. He has authored/edited seven books in power electronics, holds 21 U. S. patents, and large number of publications. He was awarded IEEE Power Electronics Society Newell Award, the IEEE Millennium Medal, the IEEE Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education, the IEEE Lamme Gold Medal, the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Eugene Mittellmann Award (for lifetime achievement), the IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award, the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Outstanding Achievement Award, GE Silver Patent Medal, GE Publications Award, and Calcutta University Mouat Gold Medal.. He also received the IIEST Distinguished Alumnus Award, D. Sc. Degree (Honoris Causa) from IIEST, and Distinguished Lecturership of IAS and IES. He is a member of National Academy of Engineering. The IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine published a special issue (June 2009) “Honoring Dr. Bimal Bose and Celebrating His Contributions in Power Electronics” with a cover photo. The IES Dr. Bimal Bose Energy Systems Award was established from 2014 which is funded by the IEEE Foundation and the IE Society.
